Designed to use a radial engine to avoid a supply conflict with the Bf 109's V-12, the prototype Fw 190 first flew on 1 June 1939.

The Fw 190's success found this air superiority fighter also being modified to serve as fighter-bomber, ground-attack, reconnaissance, all-weather interceptor, night fighter, tank destroyer and torpedo plane roles.

Later model Fw 190s were fitted with Junkers Jumo 213 inverted vee engines and were a match for the P-51 Mustang.
